Castellum of Santillán
Castellum of Santillán

The Castellum de Santillán is located 4 kilometres from the urban centre. Its area is almost one thousand four hundred square meters and on its land there are buildings corresponding to two different phases.
The first phase corresponds to a set of rooms articulated around two large rectangular rooms, corresponding to the 1st and 2nd centuries after Christ. The villa was the family home of the Roman ruling class. It constituted a home, a place of agricultural exploitation and commercial exploitation.
On the second level, the entire ancient complex was razed and a more modern one, also Roman, was built. A square walled enclosure was built, measuring 24.5 meters on a side and square towers occupy its corners.
This second phase of Santillán dates back to the 3rd century after Christ and responds to the defensive needs of the rural population in the face of the repeated invasions suffered by Baetica.
Also worth highlighting is the Capuchina Mausoleum, located in the Camorra’s foothills, 7 kilometres from Mollina. It was a funerary monument with a rectangular base in whose construction local stones with reddish mortar were used. Next to this site, ceramic remains have been found such as fragments of pots, pots and plates, among others.
